Despite the rush to ship coal east, cotton shipments traveling east from Xinjiang province have exceeded year ago levels. Total rail shipments of cotton originating in Urumchi as of January 31 reached 1,230,000 tons. This exceeds year ago shipment levels by 40,000 tons. Cotton shipments east are expected to accelerate in March following the government approval of a transportation subsidy for Xinjiang cotton.
