Taiwan's June cotton yarn exports totaled 4,847 tons, which reflected 14.2 percent year-on-year growth, while imports expanded 43.8 percent to 2,544 tons. The import surge reflects the movement of an increasingly large volume of Indian and Pakistani yarns. Cotton yarn exports for the first six months of 2007 have increased 18.5 percent to 36,418 tons, with China and Hong Kong taking the majority of the shipments at 20,574 and 12,120 tons, respectively. Shipments have increased to both Indonesia and Vietnam, but the volume was small at 2,439 and 402 tons. Yarn demand from Hong Kong has weakened, as the SAR has experienced a sharp downturn in apparel and textile exports.

Yarn imports have been on the upswing, as Taiwan's mills have purchased a greater volume of yarns from India, Pakistan, and Vietnam. January through June cumulative cotton yarn imports grew 23.1 percent to 18,241 tons. India was the top supplier, with imports up 54.5 percent at 8,360 tons, while Pakistan was the second largest supplier at 6,548 tons, followed by Vietnam at 1,592 tons.
